Traffic accident reconstruction has been around for a while. Police use the laws of physics and engineering principles along with other information, such as, the role of the drivers, the role of the vehicles and the environment and conditions of the roadway in order to come to a conclusion as to what may have caused a specific accident. During crash testing for vehicles and car seats the same principles are used. However, they are used to show how safe a vehicle or car seat is for the consumer.
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has Standard No. 213
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has Standard No. 213 for child safety restraints. This section tests everything with specific types of crash test dummies and specific restraints for the age range and size of a real child. This is how we as consumers know that our children are safe and they are in a certified restraint system.
Testing the RideSafer Travel Vest
The RideSafer Travel Vest went through the same battery of testing as all child restraint systems do. There are 4 types of injury criteria that is looked for when testing for safety. Head excursion (excursion meaning lunge forward), knee target excursion, head injury excursion and chest acceleration. The guidelines for each test are 813 mm maximum for head excursion, 915 mm maximum for knee target Excursion, 1000 maximum head injury criteria and 60 grams maximum for chest excursion. The main cause of children s injuries in crashes come from head injuries when the head is flung forward and back again. Even if you install your child's seat correctly their head will still hit the drivers seat in front of them. However, car seat and restrain manufacturers are developing new designs every day to deal with head injury.
RideSafer 2 Crash Test Results
The RideSafer 2 and 3 were both tested with a 3 year old crash test dummy and a 6 year old crash test dummy in the vests respectively. The RideSafer Travel Vest 2 and RideSafer Travel Vest 3 both passed the FMSSV 213 standards with great results.
The RideSafer Vest 2 is enabled with an attachable tether that attaches in two places on the back of the vest a making the shoulders more stable and making the child sit straighter in the seat. The other tether is locked onto your car's LATCH system. The lap belt was also engaged during this phase of testing and passed, meaning that the standards were met with just the tethers and lap belt being engaged, therefore making the RideSafer Vest 2 "Certified" under FMSSV 213. This model of the vest was also tested with lap and shoulder belts engaged and passed as well. Each mode of restraint passed the standards with the numbers being at least below half the FMSSV 213 criteria.
