If you are a keen table tennis player then it is important that you first understand the rules and how to properly play the sport. Generally, most people find the rules quite easy to comprehend as they are similar to other closely related racket sports.

Here are 5 Basic Rules

1. No Hands on The Table
One of the first rules you need to know when playing, is that you should never touch the table with your hands. Doing so results in the loss of a point. A common habit that beginners can get into is using their hands to propel them up from the table so that they can hit the higher bouncing balls. This is not allowed and in a proper game would result in the immediate deduction of 1 point.

2. When serving, the ball must be thrown 15mm
A good habit to get into when you first begin playing table tennis is a correct ball toss. What this means is when you serve the ball must be thrown at least 15mm into the air from the flat palm of your hand before being hit. You are also not allowed to throw the ball in any way which adds spin to it and it must be thrown vertically 15mm.

3. If the ball hits the net on service, then the player can serve again
Commonly when you serve in table tennis there will come a time where you hit the ball on the top of the net and then watch as it falls over onto the other side. This is called a "net" and the serve can then be replayed. There is no limit to how many "nets" a player can have on first serve. If a player serves the ball and it hits the net and does not land on the opponent's side of the table, then the server loses the point.

Remember, unlike tennis where you have 2 service opportunities, in table tennis you only have one chance to serve the ball over the net.

4. The ball must be held in a flat palm above the table
When preparing for serve you should ensure that you hold the ball flat in the palm of your hand above the table. This ensures your opponent and the umpire can clearly see the ball and where it is being held.

5. Rubber Colors
If you look at a table tennis bat you will notice that one side is often black while the other side is red. The rules states that one side must be red while the other black. This is to ensure the opposing player knows what to expect when they serve with either the black or red rubber and prevents confusion.

That concludes the 5 basic rules of table tennis. By following these rules you can have a good basic understanding on how to play the sport.
