Whether you are having a beach wedding or an intimate villa wedding, choosing a song for your first dance can be a tricky subject. Not only has the dance got to be a reflection of both your personalities but it will set the mood for the first part of the evening.

Here is a concise guide to songs that have been successful at other weddings divided into styles. Other good sources to find songs are online jukeboxes such as Songza.com.

Romantic

"At Last" Sang by Etta James / Beyonce

This is a wonderfully romantic song that was first sung by Etta James. Personally I find that her version, although beautiful, is a little too bluesy for a wedding. Beyonce made a cover of this song for the film "Cadillac Records". She sings in a much sweeter, chirpy tone and makes a much more positive track for happy occasions. Beyonce sang this song for President Obama's election party. The lyrics include phrases such as "At last my love has come along. My lonely days are over and life is like a song". It's a short song, under 3 minutes, which is ideal as it is quite a slow track.

Soulful

"I Was Made To Love Her" by Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder has written some beautiful music and lyrics and "I Was Made To Love Her" is a great example of this. Upbeat yet full of soul, it is a perfect piece to start off dancing with your partner and then invite your in-laws to join. Straight away it creates a light-hearted, sanguine mood that will get your guests tapping their feet and letting their hair down.

Rock

"She Is Love" by Oasis

Although Oasis may seem like an unusual choice, their track "She Is Love" is one of their masterpieces, ideal for couples. It is an enlivening song and slow enough to allow for a good dance. The tambourines add to that romantic feel and it includes lyrics such as "I don't know where you come from. No I haven't got a clue. All I know is I'm in love with someone who loves me too".

Funny

If you want to have a first dance that your guests will never forget having a funny remix of songs is becoming very popular. Start off with a slow cheesy track such as "When You Say Nothing At All". Then, mid song and when your guests are least expecting it, scratch the track and bring in some funny old school tracks such as "Let's Do The Twist", "Hokey Pokey", "Kung Fu Fighting", "Grease Lighting", "YMCA"... The list is endless and you can both prepare a funny dance to go with it. Have a look at some videos of couples doing these kinds of dances on You Tube.

If you have booked a good quality band for your wedding they will provide you with an entertainment planner that will help you to choose your first dance.
