job interview

So you are unemployed or unhappy in your current job but it's a recession and times are hard. You might have applied for hundreds of jobs before landing a job interview so once you do you really need to be focused and make the best possible impression. In every job interviews there are three things you really need to remember, preparation, presentation, and personality - get these right and your foot will be partially into the door before you know it.

Preparation

This one sounds obvious but you would be amazed how many candidates do not seem to do any research on the company before arriving at the job interview. Yes this can be time consuming and annoying but it will make you look professional and show you have gone the extra mile. Remember these people are assessing you and one of the things they will be looking at is whether you provide value for money - put bluntly are a hard worker. It is all very well telling them this but demonstrating it will have a far greater effect. So before the job interview look up the company - find out a bit about what they do and if there is anything you don't understand ask.  This doesn't make you look bad - it makes you look keen and shows you want to know more. I would also advise asking some questions at the end of the interview to demonstrate your knowledge for example if you have read about a merger ask how that might affect the position in question.

Presentation

While again this should be obvious you would be amazed how many candidates i have interviewed who just don't seem to have made any effort. Yes this will change depending upon the job applied for. In media for example you might want to add a few accessories to make an outfit more interesting but the basics still apply. A nice suit and clean shoes show you have put the effort in - better to look too smart than like you have just rolled out of bed. In terms of presentation also make sure you are friendly to everyone you meet - be nice to the receptionist and doorman - have a chat with them where you can. they will often try and put you at your ease and can offer tips and advice. Plus you never know how much influence they have - I once interviewed a girl who the receptionist told me was rude to her. I didn't hire the girl in question for a combination of reasons but reported rudeness never looks good.

Personality

I think a lot of interviewees don't recognise the importance of personality. Yes you need to be on best behaviour and make a good impression but you also need to project that you are someone it would be fun to have in the office. I interviewed a girl once who was very professional and clearly qualified but she seemed to be lacking any kind of personality and I couldn't imagine her fitting into the current team.  Spend some time seeing how everyone gets on - if it is a young joking office try and join in with this - although don't overdo it - a few gentle jokes are appropriate but steer clear of anything potentially controversial or offensive. When finish an interview with another candidate she initiated small talk with me about what films she was going to see at the cinema and joked about needing an overdraft as she was spending the afternoon shoe shopping. It showed me this girl was not only professional and intelligent but also had a sense of humour and was someone I could imagine having a friendly chat to over coffee - bearing in mind we would be spending forty hours in each others company this helped me to choose her. Obviously this will depend on who your interviewer is but don't be scared of showing some personality and letting them see that not only are you a hard working but you are a fun person to be around. This can also come across from the questions you ask at the end of the interview - yes ask the important ones about progression, opportunities training etc but also don't be scared to ask your potential employer what they like about working there, what they enjoy about the company.
