Spanish bullfighting tradition goes back a long way! Some research shows that it may have been Julius Caesar who introduced a primitive form of bullfighting into what was then known as Iberia by the Romans, in 63 BC. Of course, since then, bullfighting has developed and evolved over the centuries to become the great Spanish tradition it is today. Or is it so great?
Bullfighting has been banned in two of the seventeen regional autonomous areas making up the Spanish state. It was banned in the Canary Islands in 1991 as there was very little support there for the custom anyway. Bullfighting has now more recently been banned in the region of Catalonia, in the north-east of Spain, the capital of which is Barcelona. The ban came into effect on January 1st, 2012 and has opened up a massive debate in Spanish society since then.
There are certain rifts developing recently in Spanish society with reference to bullfighting. What was once the "deporte nacional" or "national sport", has now become the focus of many groups and associations defending animal rights and denouncing cruelty to animals - including bulls.
There are of course two sides to every story and bullfighting is not going to be any different. There are two clear camps; those who support the "deporte nacional" and who believe it has become an undeniable part of Spanish tradition and custom and on the other side those who believe bullfighting is barbaric and in complete violation of animal rights.
This article is intended to be purely informative but inciting the reader to make their decision on this subject. I in no way intend to promote one argument or another.
I will try to summarise the basic elements in the argument supporting the tradition of bullfighting in Spain as I have understood it from the Spanish people I know personally.
Bullfighting is a great deep-rooted tradition even an 'art-form'. The bullfighters are highly trained athletes and must 'perform' very well to succeed. In this sense it is a 'sport' for some and an 'art' for others.
The bulls chosen for this destiny are treated well; better than their counterparts who end up directly in slaughter-house before reaching our tables.
There is a whole artistic culture which has grown up around bullfighting which moves millions of Euros.
However there are those who wish to see bullfighting banned for good. Their argument focuses on other points:
The most plain and simple argument is against the animal cruelty that some feel is displayed during the bullfight. The bull is at a complete disadvantage and has no chance of survival. The fight is unfair and so cannot be classed as a "sport":
The tradition which has grown around bullfighting can be no excuse to maintain this custom, as the most significant issue is the suffering of the animal.
The bull is goaded and sacrificed in an undignified way for mere pleasure or entertainment.
