Now in its fourth season, iCarly continues to be one of Nickelodeon's most watched shows. In 2009, kids voted it their favorite television show at the Kid's Choice Awards. There are many reasons why the show has become and still remains as popular as it is. I do believe the show will remain a hit as long as the current cast and writers continue to man the helm for the show.
The stars of the show have not changed since season one and this may be a key reason why kids find the show so popular. The characters are very real and easy to relate to. The cast includes several very talented actors lead by Miranda Cosgrove who plays the title character: Carly Shay. Along with her best friend Sam Puckett (Jennette McCurdy), Carly hosts and produces her own web show which features contests, dancing and outlandish skits put on by the two girls.
Their camera man and technical guru for the show is Freddie Benson (Nathan Cress). He is often the more serious character that offsets Carly and Sam's zany characters. Spencer Shay, Carly's older brother, is played by veteran Jerry Trainor. While not fully explained on the show, Carly and Spencer;s mother is MIA and their father is a U.S. Air Force officer who while named, is never actually seen on the show. Spencer therefore acts as Carly's guardian. This lack of parents often leads to some of the more crazy moments on the show.
The hipness of the show is also appealing to today's tweens and adolescent television viewers. Incorporating a webcast into the theme of the show is something any kid today would understand and if desired could feasibly do. Today's youth are more adept with computers than ever before and the show allows them to use this knowledge and actually develop web content that occasionally is used on the iCarly web casts put on by the actors on the show.
I really appreciate that the lead characters and stars of the show are both teenage girls. Many of the other shows my kids watch don't seem to put the female characters into the same lead role. I really like that my girls can look up to and try to emulate Carly and Sam.
Miranda Cosgrove's singing talent is also on display in the opening theme. The tune is catchy and fun and at least in my home, my girls know and will sing every word each time they watch the show. The marketing for the show has capitalized on this by releasing a CD of the shows music all featuring Cosgrove on Vocals. Video games, back packs, clothing, dolls and pajamas are just some of the other items available to the fans of the show.
