Through my own path and coaching others as long as I have; I've come to realize that all the shame, humiliation and betrayal we feel comes not from others, the cause is our own. In striving to be free, happy, and live a life of abundance we take every opportunity to sabotage ourselves by believing what other people have taught us. We agree with them that we should be a certain way or we should not do what makes us happy.
Very recently I was told of a situation that happened to a couple of teenage girls that were trying to express their creativity and freedom. They were told they were wasting their time, that it would never amount to anything. My initial reaction to this story was anger at the person doing the berating of these two beautiful, highly creative souls. Then I caught myself and was no longer feeling anger. It switched to an overwhelming sense of pity to the speaker and compassion for the teenage girls.
My feelings of compassion towards the girls is simply a hope that they see through this woman's shame and betrayal of herself and do not follow in those footsteps. Also that they will not let these statements lead them to act out and make decisions that they would not have made with the pressure of this woman's self-shame, self-humiliation, and self-betrayal.
I started thinking about the agreements this woman had made with others to crush her creative spirit. To mold her into a place where there is no room for improvement, no hope for happiness because "it's just a waste of time" or "it will never amount to anything".
I'd like to take a closer look at those two statements for a moment. It's just a waste of time... NOTHING is a waste of time. Every experience we have in our lives has the opportunity to teach us something. As long as we're open enough and do not let our egos get in the way of the lesson, even the most futile, mundane task can teach us something. Believe it or not washing the dinner dishes can lead or teach you meditation techniques. Think about if that same statement had been made to Edison when he was inventing the light bulb We may still be sitting in the dark or would be crediting someone else with that invention.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that it won't work" ~Thomas Edison
Even if, as in this case, you are just trying to express your creativity that is not a waste of time. It teaches you about yourself and what you are capable of in this moment. It doesn't mean that you are going to be a failure, it simply means you haven't found the correct way to express your creativity for you.
It will never amount to anything. Does it need to amount to anything other than an expression of creativity? Do you have to make a million dollars off of every creative expression? Would it be more correct to say that even an unsuccessful attempt at creativity at the very least adds more beauty into their souls and into this world?
