One of my main interests is astronomy, particularly the search for life outside of the earth.

These are one of the most exciting times to be in as far as finding life beyond earth.

In 1995, the first extrasolar planet was discovered by two Swiss astronomers. Since then many planets have been discovered in our galaxy. Our hunt for so- called "alien earths" have revealed a number of planets in our galaxy which could have strong similarities to our world in terms of atmospheric composition and distance from their Sun.

The one giant drawback in this search however is the fact that these worlds are far too distant to travel to either by unmanned or manned spacecraft. We simply do not have the propulsion technology to go there and investigate these worlds for ourselves. Even if we find an identical twin of earth somewhere in our galaxy,we cannot prove the existence of life on that planet without actually going there. Going there with our present technology would take hundreds or thousands of years.

Maybe life has already established itself right here in our own solar system which is well within our reach. We already have sent probes to all of the planets. We will soon flyby Pluto with the New Horizons spacecraft.

Our moon of course has been visited and 12 Americans have walked on its surface and brought back samples. No evidence of any kind of life has been found to have evolved there.

There are three possible places besides Mars where astronomers are excited about the possibility of life having evolved.

One is Europa, a moon of Jupiter where it is thought a 60 mile deep ocean of liquid water exists beneath a layer of ice on the surface.

Another place is Enceladus, a small moon of Saturn where a similar ocean of water could lie beneath an icy surface.

Finally there is Titan, another moon of Saturn where we actually landed a probe back in 2005. It showed a world with a dense atmosphere and liquid methane flowing all over the planet. All of these worlds are enticing and relatively nearby.

Which leaves us with the fourth planet from the sun,the most earth like of all the planets in our solar system- Mars. With our unmanned probes it takes months not years to get there. From the years of unmanned exploration we know that in the distant past, Mars had oceans of salt water and a much denser atmosphere. There was plenty of time for life to evolve there. Recently it has been discovered that Mars has huge quantities of frozen water ice beneath the surface all over the planet. Mars could harbor life now underground where it is warmer and wetter.
