SSG Commandos Pakistan Army

Whenever army command is switched, we tend to see a typical ISPR official introduction of newly appointed Chief of Army Staff. "General xyz is noted for his patience, diligence, intelligence and sheer determination. He has been regarded as an excellent professional in army quarters".

With little or no changes, this is how one of the most powerful persons in Pakistan is presented to the nation. But what actually happens afterwards sometimes does not precisely justify the foreword, when those in power tend to abuse it. There have been very few COAS who have attempted to remain in their limits and show true professionalism. Here I just endeavored to draw a comparison of General Kyani and his predecessor General Musharraf in bullets.

- Unlike General Musharraf who came into limelight only after becoming COAS, General Kyani had already made it to headlines by his role as DG Military operations in 2001 Indian eight-month stand-off and successfully investigating attempts on Musharraf and also being instrumental in deals with Benezir Bhutto during the judiciary crisis.

- General Kyani has led this war against TTP from front and consistently increased his visits to war-zone to encourage the troops, whereas Musharraf focused more towards bargaining for sacrifices made by army.

- So far no voice has been heard against General Kyani as far as corruption is concerned. On the other hand, General Musharraf could not justify his forms, flats and lavish lifestyle.

- General Kyani seems man of few words and believing on doing more. While general Musharraf remained contented with lip-service and bragging about himself being Commando but showing no courage when one could see uncountable vehicles in his escorts.

- Missing person case was at its peak during Mush era, bowever new COAS almost stopped such abductions and in fact people have started to come back to their homes.

- General Musharraf controlled everything like a true dictator without consulting anyone. General Kyani, however, seems to believe on on-boarding and consultation.

- Musharraf created the Judiciary issue and his successor solved it. In fact he was the only General who kept quite during famous meeting of Musharraf with Chief Justice of Pakistan and refused to sign any affidavit against him.

- General Kyani appears to be more realistic than general Musharraf when it comes to Islamic ideology. His predecessor invented "Pakistan first" slogan but he has come up with more solid and popular notion that Islam and Pakistan cannot be separated.

- Pakistan army had a nightmare during Musharraf regime as far as its image was concerned. General Kyani showed unbelievable success in restoring its image back that people now show solidarity with martyrs.

- General Kyani unlike general Musharraf de-escalated army intervention in civil departments.

- Being son of non-commissioned officer, General Kyani declared 2008 as soldiers' year and for the first time in army history lower ranks are being compensated better. On the other hand, General Musharraf concentrated on rewarding the officer ranks only.

Such is the difference between the 2 COAS that we hardly have heard anything against General Kyani, though many political parties do anti-establishment politics.
