Shame on us!
Our politicians vote against keeping English as the "language" of America.
The Oil companies make billions of dollars in profits, yet they get tax breaks amounting to trillions.
Teenagers get drunk get behind the wheel of a car and smash into a tree or another vehicle.
Young children find guns and shoot their playmates.
Police are caught committing crimes.
Teachers, Boy Scout leaders and Priests commit unspeakable acts on children.
Our president wastes billions of dollars, not to mention thousands of our soldier's lives on a made up war. He ignores and undermines the scientific evidence about global warming.
The network news organizations have become profit centers rather than the national watch dogs for erroneous and misleading information from any source.
Has the moral fiber been removed from our soul? How can "we the people" demand responsible action from the congress when they are bought and paid for by special interest groups, rather than listening to their constituents?
I would like to propose that we work harder to demand that our public officials be held accountable. We also must demand that the news media do a better job of exposing the dealings of our politicians and public officials. Mr. Murrow and Marshal McLuhan must be writhing in their respective graves.
Our founding fathers were not perfect, but they had the foresight to realize the importance of collective reasoning. They understood that public discussion and debate will provide a consensus that will guide the nation to making informed decisions, laws and justice.
The world has had seen many examples of the consequences of absolute power corrupting absolutely. Pick any one and compare their regime with our current leaders. The patriot act smacks of the German SS or Mr. Stalin's secret police. The current second in command in our country has many similarities to World War Two Germanys top bananas.
Then there are the lapses in judgment regarding the information that was delivered by our top experts about the activities of certain foreign nationals taking flight instructions for jet aircraft except for that pertaining to landing them. Or take another look at what the scientists, weathermen and the officials at FEMA were saying about what hurricane Katrina would do to the levies, prior to it making landfall. Where was the outcry from the media?
With the advent of the World Wide Web, information is more readily available to the average citizen. It is my belief that if all the legislation that comes before congress were made available on the web and the fact was widely published, more citizens would make their opinions known to their representatives. All the "amendments" or changes to the legislation would be made in full public view, which would make it much more difficult for extraneous spending to be attached to any given bill.
The congressional record should also be published on the web. Let each representative and senator demonstrate how they are working for the people that placed their trust in them. How they voted on each piece of legislation should be posted. Every issue of "National" interested should be debated on-line.
Public discourse is an important part of our democracy. It requires that all sides of any given issue be presented to the general public, not just our elected officials. Programs like Public Broadcasting's Now and Bill Moyers Journal are examples of the type of programming that all voters should be exposed to.
