The UDRS system has been the subject of much controversy in recent times. The world of cricket is divided into two contrasting schools of thought on its feasibility.

There are those like Sri Lanka captain Sangakkara that favour the implementation of UDRS, believing that it will lead to better decisions on the field of play, or at least fewer contentious ones.

There are others who oppose it, using the argument that it will render the umpires on the ground without authority. This argument also assumes that players will no longer respect umpires, once an electronic devise is allowed to usurp their decision making powers.

There is something to be said for both sides, but a recent use of UDRS has actually proved beneficial to the cause of making right decisions, in the ongoing test match between England and Pakistan.

The UDRS system came to Pakistan's rescue when umpire Hill refused to give Strauss caught behind off debutant Wahab Riaz.

Bowling at a lively pace of 147.5 kmph, Riaz in only his 9th ball in test cricket appealed loudly for a caught behind decision against England skipper Strauss, only to have umpire Hill turn him down.

The Pakistan discussed the issue and decided to refer it to the third umpire under UDRS. Replays showed a clear edge that Kamran Akmal too comfortably, and suddenly England were two down, with both openers gone, and for Pakistan, a new star was born.

At the time of writing this article, England are reeling at 94/6 and Riaz has taken four of those wickets, and in his debut test. Wow!

Pakistan's debutant left arm seamer, Wahab Riaz, shattered the England top order to have the home reeling at 70/5 at lunch on the first day of the third test at the Oval. Earlier, England won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a good batting track on a rainless day.

However, there was a hint of cloud in an otherwise sunny sky, and the Pakistan captain Butt would be happy in retrospect that he lost the toss.

In a brilliant display of seam bowling Riaz took 3/16, as England went in to lunch at 70/5. Asif and Amir got one wicket each.

Breaking news: Riaz struck immediately after lunch, with Kamran Akmal taking his fourth catch of the innings, to remove Morgan. England are reeling at 74/6.
