Pakistan must adopt a more aggressive stance regarding the Kashmir issue, it seems as if everyone has forgotten about Kashmir, the United Nations is silent on the issue, and the world powers don't seem to care. Talks between Pakistan and India on the Kashmir issue have proved unfruitful, and both the countries can't agree on a peaceful solution to the problem. The Kashmiris on both side love and adore Pakistan to their fullest, but are angry over the stance of various governments in Pakistan over the Kashmir issue.

Let us journey into the past and look at the history of this great and beautiful land from the partition of India onwards. The land of Jammu and Kashmir was a princely state at the time of partition, which meant that the state was not directly ruled by the British, instead it has its own local rulers. The local ruler in the case of Jammu and Kashmir was called the Maharaja (High King), at the time of Partition of India in 1947, the princely states were given a choice, they could join Pakistan or India or join neither and remain Independent.

At the beginning the Maharajah of Jammu and Kashmir, Harri Singh wanted to remain independent, but the largely Muslim population wanted to join Pakistan. There were riots and rebellions, Pukhtoon fighters from the NWFP (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) set out in the form of militias and irregular infantry to help their Muslim brothers, they soon liberated many areas of Kashmir from the clutches of the Maharaja and his state army. The Maharaja panicked and asked the newly formed state of India for assistance. India agreed to help the Maharajah restore order, but at a price, Harri Singh would have to sign the Accession Deed and make Kashmir a part of India. This the maharaja did and the Indian forces started arriving to aid the Maharaja.

A war raged on from 1947-1948 between India and Pakistan, at the end of which the UN ordered a ceasefire, and the result was the Ceasefire Line that split Kashmir in two, Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). But to this day not much people care about the struggles of Kashmiris in both Indian occupied and Azad Kashmir. While the people living in IOK remain defiant to this day and continue fighting for their independence, the Indian army rules over occupied Kashmir with an iron fist.

On the other hand the people in Azad Kashmir are also angry, but not over India but at the Pakistani government and its policies over the Kashmir issue. Although they show a strong attachment to Pakistan, AJK youth are unwilling to dilute their indigenous Kashmiri identity, which they strongly believe in retaining forever. Research shows that the youth of Azad Kashmir are confused, they can't decide whether to call them Kashmiris, Pakistani-Kashmiris or just plain Pakistanis. While the governments of Pakistan and India play the game of politics, the Kashmiris suffer. Some Kashmiris even favor independence for Jammu and Kashmir and want their own country.

Under the laws of Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is a self-governing state under Pakistani control, but under Pakistan's constitution, the state is not actually part of Pakistan. Azad Kashmir has its own President, Prime Minister, Legislative assembly and High court. Then this writer and many others wonder why Azad Kashmir is not an independent country or a state. According to Brad Adams the Asia director at Human Rights Watch has said in 2006
Although 'azad' means 'free,' the residents of Azad Kashmir are anything but, The Pakistani authorities govern Azad Kashmir with strict controls on basic freedoms.
