Recently, we have had the unfortunate experience of having a close family member hospitalized. With all of the questions the doctors and administration ask, Summer and I have been forced to think about some things we've never discussed. These things are some of the most important things you need whether you're married or single.
One of the first questions we've heard asked of every patient being admitted is, "Do you have an Advance Directive or Living Will?" Now most of you are wondering what that is. An Advance Directive is what you want done in the event you can't decide medical treatment for yourself. This is a piece of paper that lists your wishes IN WRITING should something happen where another family member tries to take over. For instance, you have more than one child and they each have his or her own opinion. This piece of paper says who you want to decide and if you want life support and under what conditions you want to remain on it. Very important if you're in a comma or affected mentally for some reason.
Another question it's made us think about is, "Who would take care of our kids if something happened?" The obvious answer is whoever survives. But what if you're a married couple out on date night and have a wreck killing you both? Do you want your beloved children becoming a ward of the state? You need to have a will designating how your property will be divided and who will take care of your kids.
Now, consider this. That bad wreck only injured one of you and the other has to handle daily affairs. Now you need to have a Power of Attorney in place so your spouse or whoever you decide can take care of your business for you. This also applies to all of you single people out there that have bills that would need to be paid. Without a power of attorney, most businesses (banks and hospitals included) will not discuss another person's account. This makes it extremely difficult to pay somebody's light bill or credit card bill if you don't have written permission to find out how much is even due.
We don't want to think about these things, but accidents and freak events happen every day. Several people I know have passed away suddenly from accidents or health issues they didn't know they had. I'm sure you can think of several instances of "what ifs" that could have injured or killed you recently...Such as, "What if that deer had jumped out instead of staying put?" or "What if that eighteen wheeler on interstate had swerved like that with you beside it?"
Lastly, the most important thing you need to have taken care of is your salvation. If you have not accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, I urge you to consider doing so at this time. The Bible point blank says we are not promised tomorrow.
I hope this has been an eye opener for some of you and that the others who have this in place already remember to update these documents regularly. And, if all of the attorneys notice a surge of wills and powers of attorney being done in their offices, I do take tips. Remember, the fastest way up is to kneel down. May God bless you and keep you safe.
