Crazy Fast Food Facts

When visiting a fast food restaurant do you select a yogurt parfait and salad because you believe they are healthier than a hamburger and French fries? Or, do you select a fish sandwich for the same reason? While you may buy into the hype that these options are better for you than the other menu items, the fact is that this is not always the case.

There are a number of fast food restaurants that have introduced a number of menu items that seem to be fast food healthy options. This was mainly in response to the nationwide issue of obesity. What has really prompted a number of these menu changes is not healthier options, but just more options in general. Customers want the additional choices and fast food restaurants have worked to meet this demand.

The catch here is that even though the latest menu items may seem like they would be healthier, the reality is that they are not much better, nutritionally speaking, than the other items on the menu, due to the large amount of fat and sodium that they contain.

An example of this is the turkey burger that Burger King recently offered. The fact is, the amount of fat that is included in a turkey burger and a beef burger is almost even. This is due to the fact that the turkey meat typically contains the fatty skin and dark meat.

This scenario at Burger King can be seen throughout all the other major fast food chains, as well. While the restaurants try to provide healthy fast food options, when you actually look at the nutritional information, there is little difference.

The fact is that the best fast food healthy options for you and your family is to cook at home where you can have a steady diet of fat free foods. But if you have to eat fast food while you are out and about, it is a good idea to choose a lower calorie sandwich and side salad. It may also be smart to bring some almonds with you to add flavor to the salad.

Another factor to consider is that the majority of this kind of restaurants do not have a line of items that can be classified as "healthy." There are many chains that provide a lighter food option, but they are typically not as flavorful as the other items. The majority of the purchases that are made are still the fries, and fatty burgers. Until there is a huge demand for healthier fast food options, the mainstream fast food restaurants are not likely to carry as many options, since they will not make them much money in the long run compared to traditional items on their menu.
