Today at the Detroit Auto show, Nissan took the cover off of their 2016 Titan and showed America that it was serious about creating a fantastic truck that will steal at least some of the loyal American truck buyers. Nissan obviously does not expect to outsell any of the big three, but will be content to dramatically increase its share of the truck pie from years gone by.
One factor that will appeal to many, is the new partnership that Nissan has with Cummins. Cummins has now made the switch from Dodge to Nissan, and will drop its 5.0 litre, 310 hp diesel in the all new Titan. Along with all that horsepower you will get 555 lb ft of torque and a tow capacity of 12,000 lbs that should be able to handle all but the heaviest of consumer loads. The icing on the cake will be about a 20% increase in fuel mileage compared to the gasoline V8 option.
Nissan looks at its new truck as an option for people that want a truck in between a standard full size, and a heavy-duty truck. In addition to the diesel option, there will be the standard V8, and a V6 available that should also sell well, being the price of fuel continues to fall off. We all know that fuel will eventually come back at least some, so the diesel could see a surge of interest at that point.
On the outside, Nissan has given the new Titan a very tough, heavy-duty stance. Nissan stated that they wanted to give the new design a chiseled, muscular look, much like that of an NFL player. Built for power, able to withstand harsh treatment. I think the Titan hits a home run in the looks department.
So time will tell us if truck buyers will show any interest in the new Nissan Titan XD and be willing to shell out their truck dollars for something other than a Ford, Chevy or Dodge. After all, the majority of truck buyers are fiercely loyal to their brand, but who knows, After a drive in the new XD there may be some that are willing to make the switch. However well this new Titan sells, one good thing about all these new trucks coming out is how incredibly competitive the truck market is getting, and how we the consumers will greatly benefit from such fantastic trucks being constantly improved upon.
